Dans la baronnie, où presque toute la noblesse embrassa la nouvelle religion réformée au XVIe siècle, l’Église eut du mal à restaurer le culte catholique. 

Commencée au début des années 1640, la reconstruction de l’église paroissiale Saint-Martin de Tonnay-Boutonne dut attendre les années postérieures à la révocation de l’édit de Nantes pour être achevée.

Within the ‘baronry’, where most of the landlords adopted the new reformed religion in the 17^th century, the Heads of Church found it hard to restore Catholicism. Indeed, although the reconstruction works of the Saint-Martin parish church in Tonnay-Boutonne started in the sixteen forties, full completion could not be achieved before the official revocation of ‘l’Edit de Nantes’.
